He was describing how anemia can lead to serious complications at high altitude. Our party was approaching Mount Whitney cross country when I got seriously ill at 12,000 feet, after three days above 10,000 feet. This was a surprise to all of us, experienced Mountaineers because I had no previous problems with peaks above 12,000 feet. I had to be helicoptered out and spent four days in Fresno Valley Medical Center (two days in intensive care) with both HAPE and HACE. I was diagnosed as being extremely anemic. This taught me a good lesson about women as mountaineers. We often neglect warning signs of disorder because we assume that if we just get in better shape, we can do anything. In my case, I had been bleeding heavily during menstrual cycles due to fibroids for several years and just considered it a nuisance. My partner noticed that I was not getting up mountains as rapidly as before and he did suspect anemia. Before we began the Mount Whitney trek, I was very HAPPY AND RELIEVED that my period had started and that I would not be bothered with heavy menstrual bleeding. Never did I guess that this would directly relate to my not receiving enough oxygen at high altitude. You might consider putting in a section about women climbers and the different kinds of problems that they face. I think we are too macho to want to admit to any weakness. I'll be happy to send the article to you if you send me your fax number. The article goes into details about respiration rate, heart rate and the rescue efforts. My e-mail address is ychen@spl.lib.wa.us By the way, in writing his article, Sam LeBarron got a lot of information from your last article in Scientific American ( which was the only decent magazine that he could buy at the hospital gift shop when I was in intensive care).
