Under certain conditions it can be surprisingly easy, while under others it can be almost fiendishly difficult." --- Bradford Washburn Anyone contemplating a visit to Denali National Park and Preserve, whether to climb McKinley or not, must read MOUNT MCKINLEY, THE ICY CROWN OF NORTH AMERICA. You will learn about the geography of the Alaska Range region, its exploration history, and the highlights of its mountaineering conquests. All the significant attempts, ascents and accidents on McKinley are covered including accounts of the first approaches by non-natives, the hoax of the venerable Frederick Cook, the first ascent by the Hudson Stuck party, the first fatalities, all the new and technical routes, and the mistakes and successes made by various and infamous mountaineers. In it you'll be taken to the glaciers, the ridges and buttresses, the Wickersham Wall and the Orient Express, and you'll read what it's like to spend weeks on the mountain. The author, Fred Beckey is one of the renowned American mountaineers. In addition to the background information, Beckey completely covers how to prepare for a trip into the high arctic conditions of McKinley. He describes the routes and how to reach the top; what hazards you'll encounter including a details on altitude sickness and how to avoid it; and he's devoted an entire chapter on "The McKinley Experience" from the activities at Talkeetna to the life at base camp to the trudge to the top. Another notable book is Hudson Stuck's THE ASCENT OF DENALI: A NARRATIVE OF THE FIRST COMPLETE ASCENT OF THE HIGHEST PEAK IN NORTH AMERICA. First published in 1913, this is the masterpiece of mountaineering literature. Previous attempts by non-Alaskans proved futile as they and their horses mired in muskeg, were viciously attacked by mosquitoes, and fell short due to inadequate preparation for life on the mountain. The climatized Alaskans, with their early season departure crossed the muskeg on dog sled and thoroughly outfitted themselves for a true artic mountaineering expedition. Stuck gives a complete and riveting account of his team's successful "Denali" attack. The most detailed account of the mountaineering history of McKinley is Bill Sherwonit's TO THE TOP OF DENALI: CLIMBING ADVENTURES ON NORTH AMERICA'S HIGHEST PEAK. Entire chapters are dedicated to Stuck, his predecessors, Bradford Washburns proposed West Buttress route, Riccardo Cassin's first ascent via a technical route, the first winter ascent, the first solo ascent, the first solo winter ascent, and all the other notable first route ascents. As well he details the mountain tragedies and other notable mountaineering events and you'll get to know the notable McKinley personalities from Pirate to Tejas. A McKinley ascent is a truly personal venture, probably the one greatest mountaineering experience most of us could ever have. All together there are perhaps 20 really good books about exploring and mountaineering in the Alaska Range and each provides the unique perspective gained by their author. We solved none of life's problems, but I believe all of us returned with a new awareness of some of its realities. --- Art Davidson Geoffrey Gothelf is the owner of Natural Literacy, a discount mail order bookseller specializing in nature studies, environmental topics and outdoor activities.
