Shuksan in northern Washington state between June 29 and July 2. Alpine work in the Cascades is new territory for me. Most of my climbing has been in Spring snow in Colorado. Although elevations here are typically much higher than in Washington, we really don't have much concern about crevase fields. In fact, our main concern is topping out and getting back down before 11:00am to avoid the high potential of avalanche hazard. Could anyone give me some tips regarding spring climbing in the Cascades in late June. e.g. does the snow get pretty hairy by late morning? Have cornices mostly broken down by the end of June. Where is snow line elevation typically by this time of June? Are long approaches/returns a posthole problem requiring skis or snowshoes? For anyone that can give me specific advice on Shuksan, I am thinking about the Fisher Chimneys/Hells Highway route described by Beckey in his Cascade Alpine Guide. If there is a fair amount of snow in the Chimneys on Shuksan Arm, does this present some route finding problems (Unfortunately, I'll probably be climbing solo). Any advice regarding crevase fields on the Upper Curtis Glacier or Sulphide Glacier? Any other thoughts about the route would be appreciated. What about alternate routes: Since I'll probably be climbing solo, I' prefer to keep to "moderate" snow angles generally less than 45 degrees. How is the snow accumulation on Shuksan this year? If anyone is looking for a partner about this time, my family & I will be arriving in the Seattle area around the 27th or 28th of June. Let me know. Thanks!
