Note 44.362 MOUNT-L 362 of 517 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar,IJS,(61)-371-321" 35 lines 8-APR-1994 15:08 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar,IJS,(61)-371-321" 35 lines 8-APR-1994 15:08 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: Re: Bivy Sacks This is obviously subjective, but the bivvy sack is the ONE item where I think an investment in Gore-Tex is essential. Unlike tents, within which air circulates, the bivvy sack is generally in contact with the sleeping bag (or the bivvier!). The result is the soaking of the unfortunate. You might as well use a garbage liner. I am serious (a liner is an excellent emergency solution, if sufficiently tough and large). With Gore-Tex, this is almost never a problem. I say almost...the exception being when the humidity inside the sack is not much greater than outside. Under these conditions--like in a steady rain--I have found myself suffocating inside the sack. Keep your seams sealed (or buy them factory sealed) and you ought to stay dry from the rain, however. A Gore-Tex sleeping bag is a wonderful luxury and costly. A Gore-Tex bivvie sack is a lot cheaper and more flexible. I still have real concerns about taking down anywhere that my life would be jeopardized by a moist sleeping bag. But with a non-GoreTex bivvie sack, a standard down bag will turn to mush overnight. I used to have a combination Gore-Tex/coated ripstop product from Sierra Designs. It worked OK so long as I didn't thrash too much in my sleep and end up with the Gore-Tex on the bottom of me and the ripstop on top! But 100% Gore-Tex is better. BTW: I condemn Gore-Tex in shoes. I love it in rainjackets (just bought my first in five years), although it is not as vital here as in Bivvie Sacks. I have heard of problems in tents, although the jury is not yet in on this one. Perhaps the tents don't work in humid climates. SO I am hardly a booster for the product and have no affiliation with WL Gore Inc. :) Gary Lasky Santa Cruz, CA glasky@cats.ucsc.edu
