Roger,
I climbed Rainier in mid-May of 1992. I went with Rainier Mountaineering
Inc. which is the "Official National Park Guide Service" for Rainier. Their
Headquarters is on the mountain across the parking lot from Paradise Lodge.
Some suggestions: The weather on Rainier is iffy in May. We hit terrible
weather, -5F driving snow, etc. 28 people started the climb from Paradise,
less than 10 made the summit. RMI is an excellent "guide service" but, they
absolutely insist that you take and "pass" a one day fitness/fundamentals
class before you go for the summit. Only two people did not pass when I took
it and considering the conditions, I was glad I went through it and everyone
else on my rope had too!! It is a two day climb. Base camp is it 10,500 ft in
a stone cabin. You leave at 2 am the next day. BE IN SHAPE!! To make the
summit and return all the way to Paradise takes about 12 - 14 hrs. It's a haul.
Also, make reservations for Paradise Lodge for the day you come down. You do
not want to be driving after that long climb. Also, if you get back after 6 pm
there are no public showers. RMI will not let you use the facilities in the
Guide House. Paradise is your only option unless you drive out of the park.
Despite the conditions, I loved the climb. Absolute Classic Alpine Climb. There
are other options than the one I described above. More technical climbs are on
the Emmons (sic) Glacier and Colitz Glacier approaches. The one I describe is
through Ingraham Glacier. Rainier is an excellent mountain to train on for
bigger climbs in Alaska, and the Andes. All the best and CLIMB HIGH!!
