Note 44.490 MOUNT-L 490 of 517 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar, IJS,(61)-1885-450" 21 lines 12-JAN-1995 08:11 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar, IJS,(61)-1885-450" 21 lines 12-JAN-1995 08:11 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: Mt. Silverheels Date: 11-Jan-1995 Posted-date: 11-Jan-1995 Denise: Thanks for sending the account of your recent climb..just glad it ws you and not me! First a question, then a suggestion. I take it you are at an Air Force Base in Colorado...which one? I grew up out there. Now my suggestion. In the late 1800s an English lady (yes, a "Lady" and not just "female.") must have been bored with life at home. After all, a gentlewoman in those days could probably only 'work' as a missionary if she wanted to escape social restrictions and a life of bearing children and overseeing servants. Well, Isabella L. Bird said she had poor health and travelled to help her 'condition.' She went to India, Persia, etc. In 1873 she was in Colorado and now we have her diary published as "A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains", published by the Univ. of Oklahoma Press. She was quite a gal, climbed Long's Peak, survived the severe winter, and with it all kept a great record. It is a small book and I think you'd like it. Also, I'd like to know what you thought of her and it. Bill (BillDan@aol.com)
