I echo those who underscore need for follow up training after
one has been with RMI. My careful guess is that the bulk of
their clients are those who have a dream or desire to climb
Rainer, who have the money, and who may be short of time.

Ideally, one who is interested in alpine/glacier travel would
take a more thorough course rather than a one/two day training
that RMI provides. Remember that they provide shelter, hot
water, harnesses, rope....(how much less in weight is this
for you?). You supply the determination, physical conditioning,
grunt, food, etc.

There is much more one needs to be a mountaineer, but I have
seen many who use opportunity (if summited) as bragging rights.
Not to take away from their accomplishments, but let's be real
here. RMI "herds" 24 people up the mtn per trip for $600 each.
Some that I've met now believe that since they succeded 14,411'
Rainier, that they now have the skill to climb Baker, Adams,
Hood, and Shasta (other lower glaciated peaks in Pacific NW).
This with only ONE summit under their belt.

Not knocking RMI, rather the Walter Mittys who seem giddy from
their first summit experience and are unable to realistically
assess their level of skill vs the challanges of
glacier/snow travel. One only needs to turn to the Accidents
of No American Mtneering to see that sometimes, we believe too
much in our own mental publicity. Those are the folks I
wouldn't want on my rope.

Be careful out there and get good training. The rewards
are great and I have some incredible panoramas in my mental
photo album to prove it.

Yes, RMI folks are world class , with Peter Whittaker, Phil
Erschler, Himalayan Sherpas Gombu and Persumba, and many others.
They are a very patient, realistic, skilled, and caring group
of folks.
