Note 44.144 MOUNT-L 144 of 517 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar,IJS,(61)-371-321" 55 lines 21-APR-1993 09:36 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar,IJS,(61)-371-321" 55 lines 21-APR-1993 09:36 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: Re: Mount Olympus Hi Erich| I can only recommend that part of Greece| So drag that companion up the mountain| Probably the most usual way is to go by car to Litohoro, and than from there to Prionia (1100m). You can leave the car there and walk up to the shelter named "Spilios Agapitos" (2100m). It takes about 3 hours. The distance is 6km. But if you do this version you miss the most wonderful part:the valley from Litohoro to Prionia. It is defenetly worth the time, and the trail is almost uninhabited. The refuge "Spilios Agapitos" is extremely nice. I think you should make reservations if you plan to sleep there. You should. Because for the ascent to Myticas (the summit of Mount Olympus-2917m) the best time is early in the morning. By midday it'll get cloudy and you wont be able to enjoy the wonderful view. If you have more time, than you should go to the "Plateau of Muses". It has two shelters, the smaller one (a shelter named "Christos Kakkalos") is nicer (for me at least). From here you can easily reach two more summits: "Profitis Ilias" (2786m) it is no more than a walk- and "Stefani"(2905) probably the hardest of the upper three. The plateau and the view from it is fantastic-it is worth all the trouble. From here you can make a descent in the direction of "Petrostrunga". It takes about 6 hours and is something like 15km. This'll take you down to the road which goes from Litohoro to Prionia. But from that point Litohoro is still far away... I don't think you need technical equipment. But if you go in early June, you and your companion will probably have to face some snow on the mountain. In the upper part you should always be aware of falling rocks.
