Newgroups are available to people who can get to an Internet newsgroup
server. Most Universities are Internet connected, but not all have a
newsgroup server. "rec.climbing" is one of 3400 groups we have here
at Indiana University. I know of some we don't have though like
rec.backcountry. I need to bug our systems guy to add it. Anyway
newgroups are normally read using a news reader. This keeps it
separate from your mail and the reader update pointers so you don't
reread news. Also, you can setup screening if you don't want to sort
through all the stuff in one group. rec.climbing gets about 20 to 50
posts a day. Some groups are as inactive as this mail-list and others
get hundreds. If a group gets too many, they usually split the group
into more specialized areas. Some of the bitnet mail-lists are cross
posted to newgroups. Mountl is not on our cross posted list. I
suppose it could be added.

rec.climbing has many discussions from beginning indoor rock climbing
to Mt. Everest expeditions. Most articles are about sport rock
climbing, but there is a good bit of discussion about traditional, big
wall, ice, and, mountain climbing. Here's today's postings:
