Subj: John Muir Trail

Hi there from a new subscriber.

I (and a few friends) are planning to walk the John Muir Trail in the
Sierra Nevada, California next summer - 210 miles from Yosemite to Mt
Whitney. Any information/tips etc would be much appreciated...

In particular: how long should it take - we can easily do 15-20 miles
a day on the flat, but the JMT is not flat!! Is it better to do it N-S
or S-N? How hungry are the bears?? Can anything (eg fuel, if so which)
be purchased at the campsites or do you have to leave the trail to buy
things? Can Whitney be climbed without ice axe etc?

Any particularly recommended guidebook? (I have the titles of a few).

Any kind of reply would be most helpful.
