Note 44.286 MOUNT-L 286 of 517 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar,IJS,(61)-371-321" 77 lines 13-JAN-1994 11:57 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar,IJS,(61)-371-321" 77 lines 13-JAN-1994 11:57 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: Dolomite climbing guidebooks Date: 12-Jan-1994 Posted-date: 12-Jan-1994 --------------------------Dario's message--------------------- Subject: DOLOMITES I am interested in rock climbing in the Dolomites. Can anyone recommend a guide or a guidebook? Being from Missouri where all the rocks are short, I am most comfortable on short routes, up to 50 meters or so. Thanks. And now in rusty Italian - Io voglio ascendere nelle Dolomiti? Potrebbe raccomandare un guida o un libra di guida? Io sono de paese con sassi curti, e sono piu commodo con rutti curti come circa 50 metri. Grazie. Dario Cova --------------------------end of Dario Cova message-------------- I can recommend the following guidebooks, all, I believe, still in print: 1. BRENTA DOLOMITES SCRAMBLERS' GUIDE by Michael Anderson, West Col Productions, 1982. 2. DOLOMITES: SELECTED CLIMBS by Ron James, Alpine Club, London, 1988. 3. VIA FERRATA: SCRAMBLES IN THE DOLOMITES: FIFTY CLIMBING-PATHS by Frass, Hoefler and Werner, translated by Cecil Davies, Cicerone Press, Milnthorpe, Cumbria, Great Brittain, reprinted 1986. 4. THE DOLOMITES OF ITALY: A TRAVEL GUIDE by James and Anne Goldsmith with the assistance of others, A & C Black/London and Hunter Publishing Inc., Edison, NJ, 1989. 5. ITALIAN ROCK: SELECTED CLIMBS IN NORTHERN ITALY by Churcher. 6. CLASSIC CLIMBS IN THE DOLOMITES, by Dinoia. All of the above are probably still available through Chessler Books, 26030 Highway 74, P.O. Box 399, Kittredge, Colorado 80457, (800) 654-8502, FAX (303) 670-9727. I don't own a copy of 5. or 6., but I do have the others and they are quite good. All of them have either drawings, photos, route photos or route topos or a combination of them. The route photos in item 2. are particularly excellent. The travel guide is much more than a travel guide in that it gives info on hikes and walks that will get you right to the rock faces, and the photos can give you lots of ideas for trying something out-of-the-way. It is divided in half, the first half covers summer scenes, and the second half, winter scenes. The photos are high quality and the book is packed with vital info. All of the above items are listed in Chessler's 1993 Catalog No. 44, page 20, and sell for around $20 each. The Brenta Dolomites goes for $9.95. There are of course many other guides in foreign languages which I didn't list above. By foreign, I mean other than English, but then it depends where you're situated. Since you're from the States, I only listed English-speaking sources. Hope this is helpful, for a starter. -- "whether to paddle with oar against the flow is the question" -SM ____________________ __ | \______________________BBBBBBB________________________| | | Stuart Milligan || BBBBBBBB | | | Drake Memorial Library || SSSS U U BB BB NN N Y Y | | | SUNY at Brockport || S U U BBBBBBBB N N N Y Y | | | Brockport, NY 14420 || SSSS U U BBBBBBB N N N YYY | | | (716)395-2508:FAX 5651 || S U U BBBBBBBB N N N Y | | | |____________________/ BBBBBBB |__| paddles break mountains quake ČČ ČČČČČ ČČČČČ ČČČČČ ČČČČČ ČČČČČ ČČČČČ ČČČČČ ČČČ
