This summer I was in Colorado between 10000' and 14000' for the whole month of July. Two years ago, I had a deviated septum corrected and reconstructive surgery - rinaplasty (exuse the spelling of these medical terms, please). My operation and recovery was superb and I experienced no problems from the operation. However, midway through this July, at altitude, I noticed my nose had swelled somewhat. I had the traditional flu like symptoms initially, that left me with the sniffles. The "inner panel" (as my surgeon refers to it) the panel that divides the nose into two nostrils, was swollen and at the time seemed to me to be a cist or something. Upon my return home (and back to sea level) the swelling went down considerably and all that remained was a small lump on the right side of my inner panel of my nose. I checked in with my surgeon and upon exploration of the lump, he found an absess inside. A suture had become infected. He has never had that occur before in his patients. There was no reason or indication for that to have happened. I asked him if altitude could have been be a factor, but he has not had experience in dealing with that aspect. I was swimming daily to train for that trip. And i also kayak often. And I asked if those activities could have been a factor. But the condition, if it was present beforehand, did not present itself until i was at altitude. I have not had any problems since, but I have not been back at altitude either. I do wonder what my experience will be when I go back. Has anyone presented to you a similiar experience? Mail me direct or via this network Joanne
