First, the rock is *unusual*, featuring an extremely rough igneous-type rock with loosely cemented pebbles embedded in the walls. This is nothing like we see in the Midwest...or anywhere else in the country that I know of. Perhaps some Canadian mountain climbers would like to draw comparisons with the texture of the loose walls up there... :-) The scenery is beautiful, featuring wonderful hikes in the National Monument. Camping is free *weekdays only* on the West Side (no camping on weekends); on the East Side, camping costs at a local, private campground...I think $6 per person. The East and West sides are connected only by the trails and it takes hours to drive around. The weather is unseasonably warm now, but by the end of March it ought to be nice! In sum, Pinnacles is worth visiting if you are in the area. Good guidebooks are available and in print (mine is at home, so no cites). The Monterey Bay is nearby, featuring the resort town of Carmel, the Monterey Bay aquarium (fantastic...built into the sea), and the tourist/university town of Santa Cruz. But I would recommend, instead, focusing on closer warm-weather locales for the Spring: Red Rocks (Las Vegas), Tucson area, Yosemite (Cookie Cliff and other sunny walls at lower elevations), and Colorado climbs at lower elevations (Boulder, Eldorado Canyon, etc). There's lots to visit and we are an additional 1000 miles of driving from Bloomington, past Colorado to California. Gary Lasky University of California Santa Cruz glasky@cats.ucsc.edu
