Strong arobic base, I run and bike but, most advice I've read stress biking. Basketball is another option especially if you can get into a full court game. About three months prior to my climbing I find the highest building near me and I climb the stairs with a loaded pack. (Usually 35\50lbs) Go up and down until I approximate 1,000 to 1,500 feet elevation gain. Do this about 3 or 4 times per week. I try to get to my destination at least a couple of days before I start climbing. Walk around and get acclimated. When climbing limit your elevation gain above 14,000 ft to about 1,000 to 1,500 ft per day. Don't sleep at your highest elevation gain. Down climb and retrace the next day. All of this is what has worked for me but none of it is a guarantee. I have climbed in Europe where people smoked while climbing, ate big meals and drank with little effect. On the other hand, I have taken running friends climbing and they died above 10,000 ft. Good Luck and Climb High!! > > > Any ideas to help avoid Altitude Sickness for someone who lives at > 900' in the midwest?
