Subj: Re: Altitude Sickness
Posted-date: 19-Sep-1994

There are several ways to avoid mountain sickness. Some, like training,
fitness, special diet, special breathing methods, meditation and more are
individual but not tested by controlled studies. If one works for you,
then use it, but remember that very few people can go high fast without
paying a price, no matter how fit etc.

There's no reason for any one to have mountain sickness because there are
proven methods to prevent AMS, HAPE, and HACE. Several studies have shown
that about 25% of all people going to 9000 feet or higher in a day or two
will have symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness, and one in a thousand will
have High Altitude Pulomnary Edema or High Altitude Cerebral Edema.

Last week at the World Congress of Mountain Medicine and Physiology in La
Paz Bolivia (breathtakingly high at 11,000 feet) several new ideas and
proven facts emerged, and our thouhts about mountain sickness of all types
are changing.

Many well controlled studies have proven that two medications - Diamox and
Dexamethasone - if properly taken will prevent most symptoms and are safe
and effective for most people. There's a lot of literature on the subject
and NO ONE needs to get sick in the mountains.

If you send me an SASE I'll be glad to mail you some current material,
uggestions, readings etc.
