I would recommend using the AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) huts located in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, which provide a dry, relatively warm place to sleep and cook. I have crossed country skiied and snow-shoed to these huts... for more info contact the AMC or the National Forest Service in the White Mountains. A Native Vermonter... now residing in LA.
